This week on Helping Hand it’s the Hawaii Association of the Blind returning, the state affiliate of the American Council of the Blind, made up of members of the community who are blind, have vision disabilities and or are loved ones of or advocates for the blind. They advocate for and provide service to the blind on a number of levels, and there are many ways to support them.

This week on Helping Hand we get a return visit from RYSE, Residential Youth Services and Empowerment. The nonprofit operates an access center where Honolulu-area street youth 18-24 are assessed and referred to appropriate support services, according to their website, and get access to a safe temporary living space. According to their website, the nonprofit specializes in riding instruction for special needs individuals, but provides therapeutic riding to individuals of any ability, with a goal to improve the minds and bodies of riders, using horses as partners.

On Helping Hand, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence welcomes back Hawaii Fido Service Dogs, a nonprofit that’s been internationally accredited under ADI: Assistance Dogs International. Program Director Susan Luehrs & Jim Kennedy, the Executive Director said only two organizations have this accreditation in the state. They train dogs to support people with disabilities other than blindness.

This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about the 2019 Footsteps to Transition Fair Saturday, November 2nd, at Kapolei Middle School cafeteria from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Hosted by the Department of Education, it’s for middle and high school students with special needs and their family, loved ones and caregivers to assist in critical details of making a life transition and explore a range of opportunities for adult life.

This week on Helping Hand it’s Save Vietnam’s Wildlife, a Vietnam nonprofit, founded and run by Vietnamese. While they work to save a number of animals, they’ve earned respect from a number of conservation organizations for their rapid-response rescues and success in rehabilitating pangolins, a highly vulnerable, virtually defenseless mammal being eaten into extinction by consumers in the Asia Pacific.
