This has been another week of heat, drought and fire in many parts of Australia — including the country’s largest city, Sydney. This morning local time, the top government official in the state of New South Wales declared a state of emergency, and temperatures may be on their way to another record.

It has been a week of destruction in parts of Australia as wild fires have swept across the eastern part of the country. While conditions are improving slightly as the weekend approaches, the danger is not over.

LOS ANGELES — Three people have died at the scene of Southern California wildfires this week, authorities said Saturday, as firefighters aided by diminishing winds beat back a blaze on the edge of Los Angeles that damaged or destroyed more than 30 structures and sent a blanket of smoke across a swath of neighborhoods.

LOS ANGELES — An aggressive wildfire in Southern California seared its way through dry vegetation Friday and spread quickly, destroying dozens of homes as tens of thousands of residents scrambled to get out of its way, authorities said.

SAN FRANCISCO — Millions of people were poised to lose electricity throughout northern and central California after Pacific Gas & Electric Co. announced Tuesday it would shut off power in the largest preventive outage in state history to try to avert wildfires caused by faulty lines.

  Crews on the west side of Hawai‘i Island have been fighting a series of brush fires over the past two months. Dry conditions have complicated the efforts—and that’s also the case in Southeast Asia. HPR’s Bill Dorman has more on that story in today’s Asia Minute.

Indonesia’s weather patterns are not slaves to the calendar.  Rainy season and dry season can vary on the thousands of islands sprawling across the archipelago.  Dry season is already underway on parts of the island of Sumatra…and that means fires.
