A new documentary screening in New Zealand this week focuses on the lives of the leitis of Tonga, transgender women with traditional roles at court and in church. The film, called “Leitis in Waiting,” shows that they also face discrimination and even punishment. We have more from Neal Conan in today’s Pacific News Minute.

Transgender advocates are calling on the Hawai‘i State Department of Education to move more quickly on creating specific guidelines for transgender students. An online petition supporting those plans has already received more than 5,600 signatures over the past two weeks.

Lawmakers Advance Transgender Birth Certificate Bill

Legislation that would make it easier for transgender people to change genders on their birth certificates is one step closer to becoming law.

Currently, residents who want to amend their birth certificates in Hawaii need to undergo a medical sex change. The new bill would change that process to only require a note from a physician.
