Southwest Airlines is scheduled to begin service between Sacramento and Hawaii on Sunday, part of its expanding flight schedule in the islands since entering the market and challenging local leader Hawaiian Airlines earlier this year.

Southwest Airlines expects to more than quadruple its daily number of seats flying into and between Hawaii's islands before the completion of its first year of Hawaii service, officials said.

HILO, Hawaii — Southwest Airlines has announced plans to offer interisland flights across Hawaii, officials said. Southwest announced Thursday it will begin offering flights from Hilo as early as next year, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Friday.

Hawaiian Airlines has dropped prices for some flights as Southwest Airlines enters the Hawaiʻi market.

It’s official: Southwest Airlines is putting tickets on sale for flights to Hawaiʻi from California and between the major islands. 

According to the company’s website, the initial flights will be between Oakland and Honolulu, starting March 17th. Interisland tickets are also available on the airline's site.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday it has granted Southwest Airlines approval to begin flights between California and Hawaii, capping the airline's effort to extend its reach 2,400 miles (3,800 kilometers) across the Pacific.

Southwest Airlines Considers Las Vegas-Hawaii Flights

  The chief executive of Southwest Airlines says the Dallas-based carrier is considering adding nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Hawaii.

Southwest CEO Gary Kelly says launching flights to Hawaii from four California cities is the airline's priority this year, but adding flights from Nevada to Hawaii could be possible next year.

The airline hopes to begin service to Hawaii in April.

It completed a test flight from Oakland, California, to Honolulu last month to show federal aviation officials that it should be authorized to begin flying across the Pacific Ocean.
