Short-term vacation rentals are back under the microscope as public concern rises over enforcement issues amid COVID-19.  The pandemic has brought changes to the industry that may have a lasting impact.

Molokaʻi may become the first island in Hawaiʻi where new short-term vacation rentals are banned and old ones phased out. The Maui County Council quietly approved a measure last month to do all that and it’s now awaiting Mayor Michael Victorino’s signature. This comes as Maui planners consider extending a ban to the entire county.

Hawaiʻi visitors can now buy medical marijuana while on vacation in the islands. The state Health Department announced it is offering temporary cannabis cards to qualified out-of-state patients.

There are now more payday loan stores in Hawaiʻi than there are 7-11s. The state’s growing demand for payday loans is no surprise given the high cost of living in the islands.
