HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard said her department takes responsibility for the actions of officers on its now-suspended coronavirus enforcement units who are accused of abusing the department’s overtime policy.
Honolulu police were reviewing body camera footage after police fatally shot a second man in less than 24 hours. The shootings come as there appears to be uptick in Honolulu crime. Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard says she is concerned that there has been about a 20% increase in the number of violent crimes involving firearms.
Police departments around the country are having trouble recruiting new officers and Hawaii’s largest police force is no exception. The Honolulu Police Department is currently short 260 officers, or about 10 percent of its total force.
