Sundays at 6pm to 8pm on HPR-1. Hosting “The Brazilian Experience” has become a bright and joyous spot in Sandy’s incredibly full schedule. It is a vehicle through which she is able to tap into her ethnomusicology background, while sharing her own Brazilian experience with the community and beyond. In the two-hour program, she enjoys hosting guests from the local Brazilian community and other musically oriented friends who bring their favorite selections to the program. It is also exciting to receive new releases and to report on current events coming out of Brazil.

Childish Gambino’s viral video, “This is America,” offers a cold view of American culture that has sparked streams of comment online.   Gambino says he made the song for people to play on the 4th of July.  Spinoffs on Youtube beg the question, if a Hawai‘i version of “This is America” were done, what would it say?  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa asked a local hip hop crew, the Super Groupers, what they would include in a version of “This is Hawai‘i.”

"At my family reunions we always sing 'Blessed be the tie that binds,' and more and more I realize that music is often the tie" says Vandeveer, who has hosted the show for ten years on HPR.
