HONOLULU (AP) — A U.S. judge sentenced a former high-ranking Honolulu prosecutor to 13 years in prison Monday and her retired police chief husband to seven years, saying she stole money from her own grandmother and then used his law enforcement power to frame her uncle for a crime he didn’t commit -- all to maintain the couple’s lavish lifestyle.

Updated: 11/30/2020, 3:25 p.m. A federal judge today sentenced former Honolulu deputy prosecutor Katherine Kealoha to 13 years in prison for masterminding an elaborate scheme that defrauded her grandmother, led to her uncle's false arrest and plundered the trust funds for two children. Her husband, ex-Police Chief Louis Kealoha, received 7 years in prison for his part in the scheme.

Police Chief Susan Ballard said yesterday that an HPD committee began re-evaluating the department’s use of force policies in the last week. She says it has been five years since there was a complete review of that policy.

Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard says it may take several days to process the Diamond Head area crime scene where two Honolulu police officers were shot and killed Sunday morning. After the shootings, a fire broke out, eventually engulfing seven homes in the area.

Honolulu police were reviewing body camera footage after police fatally shot a second man in less than 24 hours. The shootings come as there appears to be uptick in Honolulu crime. Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard says she is concerned that there has been about a 20% increase in the number of violent crimes involving firearms.
