Hawaii recorded 2 more deaths today and 271 new COVID-19 cases, the state Department of Health reported. The latest counts bring the state death toll to 81 and the total number of cases to 9,473. Of the new cases, 236 are on Oahu, 34 on Hawaii Island, and 1 on Maui.

Hawaii Department of Health today reported three more deaths and 310 new cases. The latest case count brings the state's total to 8,139 and deaths to 62. Of the new cases, 263 are on Oahu, 39 on Hawaii Island, 7 in Maui County and 1 on Kauai.

Where we stand

A day after saying COVID-19 infections appear to be stabilizing, the Hawaii Department of Health today reported one of the state's worse daily counts in the pandemic: 4 deaths and 306 new cases. 

Of the new infections, 289 are on Oahu, 10 on Hawaii Island and 7 on Maui. Total cases stand at 6,915 on Oahu, 318 in Maui County, 253 on Hawaii Island and 56 on Kauai.

The latest count brings the state's total to 7,566 cases. Total deaths rose to 55.

The Hawaii Department of Health reported 2 deaths and 169 new COVID-19 cases today. That brings the state's total to 6,600 cases. Total deaths now number 49. Of the new cases, 150 are on Oahu, 10 in Maui County, and 9 on Hawaii Island.

The Institute for Human Services on Saturday confirmed the death from COVID-19 of one of its workers, 36-year-old Willie Talamoa. 

IHS recently converted its Sumner Street men's shelter into a temporary quarantine center after a cluster of about 20 cases developed at the location.

The Hawaii Department of Health reported 1 death and 284 new COVID-19 cases today. That brings the state's total to 6,356 and total deaths to 47. Of the new cases, 259 are on Oahu, 10 in Maui County, and 15 on Hawaii Island.

Teachers and students across the state concluded their first week of school Friday. Some attended class in-person and others started the year online with distance learning. That decision was largely left up to individual principals.

Hawaii public schools today begin a month of distance learning to kick off the new school year.

But for many students -- and some parents -- it will be back to campus to learn in person how to use online technology and meet the teachers.

The teachers’ union opposes that plan. It says it’s not safe to hold in-person training while COVID-19 cases are surging.

At Kauai High School, about half the students, several hundred of them, are expected on campus to attend all-day classes for one week.
