  Quinn Kelsey left Hawai‘i thirteen years ago to tackle a winding and often treacherous road to success in the rarified world of international opera.  Last year, the New York Times called Kelsey a “superb young baritone” in the run up to his astonishing Beverly Sills Award commendation from the Metropolitan Opera.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports, he’s home to share the fruits of his progression.

Hawaii Opera Theatre's educational touring adaptation of Mozart's The Magic Flute opens HPR’s 2016 Atherton Summer Season on Saturday, May 14. Performed by a small cast from HOT’s Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio, the special youth-friendly matinee begins at 3:00 p.m. The hour-long show, originally created for grades K – 8, offers opportunities for adventurous audience members of all ages to play a four-headed dragon and even sing a chorus.

Star-crossed lovers, fairies, and a weaver transformed into a half-donkey come together in an enchanted forest.

On February 14 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, Hawaii Opera Theatre opens a new production of Benjamin Britten's setting of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. This is the first Britten opera HOT has brought to Honolulu audiences.

   W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan already had a string of hits to their credit when they pulled out the stops for The Mikado.  First performed in March of 1885, by the end of that year, The Mikado was being staged by 150 companies in Europe and the US, and its popularity continues.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports on the latest production by the Hawai’i Opera Theatre.
