Borneo Rhino Alliance

One of the rarest creatures on Earth has died. The last Sumatran rhino in Malaysia, Iman, passed away Saturday at the Borneo Rhino Sanctuary in Sabah, Malaysia, due to complications with inoperable tumors. 

The Sumatran rhino once inhabited a wide area in southeast Asia, but today is one of the world’s most critically endangered animals, with fewer than 80 thought to still remain in Indonesia, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

On Helping Hand, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence welcomes back Hawaii Fido Service Dogs, a nonprofit that’s been internationally accredited under ADI: Assistance Dogs International. Program Director Susan Luehrs & Jim Kennedy, the Executive Director said only two organizations have this accreditation in the state. They train dogs to support people with disabilities other than blindness.

Administrative Liaison Patrick Thompson speaks about their mission to prevent cruelty to animals, eliminate pet overpopulation, and enhance the bond between humans and animals.

Tower of Power is back in the Aloha State, with dates through Sunday at the Blue Note, and back on All Things Considered with HPR's Dave Lawrence. The band have a long history here, and the late concert promoter and radio personality Tom Moffatt often called them "one of Hawaii's favorite bands".

Blake and Brent Cousins are filmmakers from Hawaii Island. In 2001 they released the film “The Night Marchers”, based on the island legend of the deadly ghosts of ancient warriors. They recently released a new version of the film, which is in theatres now.

This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about the 2019 Footsteps to Transition Fair Saturday, November 2nd, at Kapolei Middle School cafeteria from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Hosted by the Department of Education, it’s for middle and high school students with special needs and their family, loved ones and caregivers to assist in critical details of making a life transition and explore a range of opportunities for adult life.
