Gov. David Ige has granted Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami's request to temporarily reinstate the 14-day mandatory quarantine for travelers arriving on the island effective Dec. 2, regardless of whether they received a negative COVID-19 test or not.

The state Department of Health reported two deaths and 120 new COVID-19 cases today. Because of the department's two-day delay in posting new numbers, the counts represent cases from Tuesday. Some counties are reporting more timely numbers that may differ from the state's counts.

Oahu had 92 new cases, Maui 14, Hawaii County 11 new cases, Kauai 3,  and Lanai and Molokai none. There were no new cases diagnosed out of state.

Oahu had 80 new cases, Hawaii County 10, Kauai 3, Maui 11, and Lanai and Molokai none. There were 10 new cases diagnosed out of state.

The latest counts bring the Oahu total to 14,873, Hawaii County, 1,551, Kauai 100, Maui 495, Lanai 106 and Molokai 17. The number of out-of-state cases total 191.

Updated: 11/21/2020, 1:30 p.m. In a second outbreak at a state prison, 87 inmates at the Waiawa Correctional Facility have tested positive and 70 tested negative, according to state Department of Public Safety yesterday. Fifty of the cases were added to the state's daily case numbers of 163, which today returned the count to three digits. Seven deaths were also reported by the state, unrelated to the prison outbreak.

Pfizer said Friday it is asking U.S. regulators to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine, starting the clock on a process that could bring limited first shots as early as next month and eventually an end to the pandemic -- but not until after a long, hard winter.

The action comes days after Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech announced that its vaccine appears 95% effective at preventing mild to severe COVID-19 disease in a large, ongoing study.

Hana has reported one case of COVID-19, Maui Mayor Michael Victorino announced yesterday. The case is believed to be the first in the rural East Maui community but the individual is being tested again to rule out the possibility of a false positive.
