Where we stand

The Hawaii Department of Health today reported no new deaths from COVID-19 and 56 cases statewide. It's the second consecutive day of no deaths and double-digit case counts. But two more fatalities at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo were reported yesterday, bringing the death toll at the troubled nursing home to 24.

The oversight commission for Hawaiʻi’s jails and prisons is raising concerns over the state’s plan to mass test inmates for COVID-19. The state Department of Public Safety maintains its prison population is a priority for testing, but at their monthly meeting, the commissioners disagreed, saying it is jails that are more of a worry.

The Hawaii Department of Health today reported 13 deaths from COVID-19 and 114 new cases. Twelve of the deaths are from the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo, where 17 people have died of the virus. The state said the delay in accounting for the fatalities was because of pending medical records.

The Hawaii Department of Health today reported four more deaths from COVID-19 and 160 new cases. The daily infections are in the triple digits again having fallen below 100 earlier in the week.

The Hawaii Department of Health today reported three more deaths from COVID-19 and 102 new cases. The daily infections are up to triple digits again after two days when daily infections had fallen below 100.

Fourteen people have now died of COVID-19 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo operated by Utah-based Avalon Health Care Group. The nursing home operator has also recorded deaths at its two other Hawaii facilities, five at the Hale Nani Rehabilitation & Nursing Center and three at Avalon Care Center.

The state Department of Health today reported 2 more deaths and 167 new cases, bringing the state death toll to 96 and the total number of cases to 10,459. There have now been 9,446 cases on Oahu, 562 on Hawaii Island, 367 for Maui County, and 58 on Kauai. Twenty-six residents were diagnosed out of state.

The death toll at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home rose to eight today, a day after U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz called for immediate intervention by federal agencies and chastized the state and county for failing to act fast enough to control the outbreak at the Hilo nursing home.

A day after saying COVID-19 infections appear to be stabilizing, the Hawaii Department of Health today reported one of the state's worse daily counts in the pandemic: 4 deaths and 306 new cases. 

Of the new infections, 289 are on Oahu, 10 on Hawaii Island and 7 on Maui. Total cases stand at 6,915 on Oahu, 318 in Maui County, 253 on Hawaii Island and 56 on Kauai.

The latest count brings the state's total to 7,566 cases. Total deaths rose to 55.

The Hawaii Department of Health reported 2 deaths and 277 new COVID-19 cases today. Testing shows the state's positivity rate is over 10% --  placing the state in the red zone under federal guidelines.

Gov. David Ige and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell today announced they are reinstating the stay-at-home order for Oahu that had been imposed in March to help stop the spread of COVID-19 cases. The order will take effect Thursday and last for at least two weeks and will not affect the Neighbor Islands.

The Hawaii Department of Health reported 1 death and 284 new COVID-19 cases today. That brings the state's total to 6,356 and total deaths to 47. Of the new cases, 259 are on Oahu, 10 in Maui County, and 15 on Hawaii Island.

Governor David Ige extended his COVID-19 emergency order until September 30. This extends the state's requirement for facial coverings in compliance with county rules, the 14-day quarantine for transpacific and certain interisland travel, and rental eviction moratorium.
