The use of an Oahu hotel to quarantine people will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal coronavirus recovery funds each month, officials said.

Most of the 21 people who call themselves a misunderstood, nature-loving family, remained jailed Tuesday over allegedly violating Hawaii’s traveler quarantine, even after they agreed to return to Los Angeles.

Twenty-one people who recently arrived in Hawaii, describing themselves as a family with a leader, were arrested and charged with violating the state's mandatory 14-day quarantine put in place in an attempt to protect the islands from the spread of the coronavirus, police said.

The state of Hawaii said Friday it wants travelers to use an online program to provide information about their travel plans to help authorities enforce a 14-day coronavirus quarantine imposed on people arriving in the islands.

Hawaii's coronavirus case count now stands at 175, according to the state health department's latest update. The number of positive and presumptive positive cases represents an increase of 24 from Saturday. Oahu now has a total of 123 coronavirus cases, Maui 20, Kauai 12 and the Big Island 12.

The state Department of Health said Hawaii has recorded its first death from the coronavirus. The Oahu adult with multiple underlying conditions died on March 20. The department said in a news release that the victim had potential, indirect travel-related exposure.
