Plastic is a growing problem for ocean waters — not only in Hawaii but around the world. And new research this week from an Asian island nation shows part of that challenge involves the travel and tourism industry.

Gamelan orchestras are traditional percussion ensembles from select parts of Indonesia.  Since the 1970’s, Honolulu has been home to a sturdy local enclave of gamelan musicians, centered around a charismatic educator who taught history and culture along with the music.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports family and performers are flying into Honolulu for a special commemoration set for this Saturday, November 18.

    Shadow puppet performances are still a vibrant part of village life on Bali.  Flat cut outs are silhouetted against a translucent screen by the light of a coconut husk lamp.  Religious and historical epics make up interwoven plot lines that continue for six hours or more through the night.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports, there’s a new twist on the tradition brewing at Kennedy Theatre.

“Subali-Sugriwa: Battle of the Monkey Kings” will be performed the last two weekends of January at Kennedy Theatre on the UH Mānoa campus.
