Americana

Earlier this week, we lost celebrated Americana musician Justin Townes Earle. In tribute, we'll be playing a a heap of bluegrass, alt-country, Americana and folk for tonight's program.

We'll be taking a trip down the Delta and back in time for tonight's program and, with apologies to Jon Alan, dig into some old school blues, gospel and Americana - with just a touch of folk.

We're all pretty gutted about the loss of folk and country music legend John Prine earlier this week, so what better way to pay tribute to the man is there other than playing some of his best tracks as well as the music of his peers and the many musicians he influenced.

Inspired by NPR's "Turning The Table: 8 Women Who Invented American Popular Music" piece, tonight's show honors the 8 women that the piece centers around (Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Maybelle Carter, Ella Fitzgerald, Marian Anderson, Rosetta Tharpe, Celia Cruz, and Mary Lou Williams) along with other female artists, old and new, whose music draws inspiration from them in one way or another.

16 years ago today, one of the most iconic figures in country music passed away. So tonight on Bridging the Gap we commemorate the legendary Johnny Cash with some of his best songs, as well as tons of country, folk and Americana to round out the night.

Exploring a little Indie Americana this evening. Mixing in a little Indie Rock, Country and other surprises.
