Mauna Kea Protest Convoy Could Tie Up H-1, Other Roads On Sunday

Sep 7, 2019

Oʻahu motorists should expect traffic delays Sunday morning heading west from Hawaiʻi Kai to Waiʻanae.

Supporters of the protests against building of the Thirty Meter Telescope are organizing a cross-island convoy. Organizers expect several hundred motorists.

Honolulu police officers will escort the motorcade from Maunalua beginning at 9 a.m. traveling to Māʻili by around noon.

They will start out on Kalanianaole Highway, then travel on the H-1 Freeway and Farrington Highway. On-ramps to the H-1 will be closed while the convoy is underway.

Convoy organizers are asking participants to arrive at Maunalua Bay by 8 a.m. for a briefing on the event’s kapu aloha or nonviolence code of conduct.
