State Supreme Court Hears TMT Arguments
The construction of the giant Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea has become a flashpoint for Hawaiian activists for the past several years. The long-delayed project is once again in the hands of the State Supreme Court. Arguments for and against the continuation of the $1.4 billion telescope were heard yesterday.

State Auditor Report Reveals Lack of Oversight of Law Enforcement Funding Program
To its supporters, civil asset forfeiture is a valuable tool of law enforcement, especially effective in the war on drugs. To its opponents, it is legalized theft. It’s the process by which a person’s assets can be seized when he or she is suspected of a crime. That is suspected not convicted, and therein lays the heart of the legal argument against it. A State Auditor’s report released earlier this week took the State Attorney General’s Office to task, saying the bar was set too low and that transparency and accountability were lacking.

Hawaii Teachers Relocate to Mainland at Record Rate
Hawaii has a well-documented problem recruiting and retaining public school teachers. At a meeting of the State Board of Education yesterday, Hawaii State Teachers Association President Corey Rosenlee revealed that teachers are now moving to the mainland at a record-setting rate. One of those teachers who recently left Hawaii is Kellee Kelly. After years of struggling to make ends meet, Kellie made the decision to move her family to the mainland. She now lives in Dallas, Texas.
