The Honolulu Museum of Art is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawai‘i by commissioning new art work.  They are sponsoring a series of collaborations between eminent local artists and Japanese masters.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports on the first collaboration this weekend, involving a master of feminine style taiko drumming, and a shamisen player who’s jammed with Herbie Hancock.

Keeping the music mellow and Jazzy this evening, exploring both new Jazz releases as well as some classics. I'll also be taking a dive into the new John Coltrane release of lost recordings.

Tonight on Bridging the Gap i'm focusing on Jazz from Japan...a country that has turned out an awful lot of good music, but is often overlooked for whatever reason.  A lot of the show will be centered around a new compilation released by BBE records entitled "J-Jazz, Deep Modern Jazz from Japan 1969-1984" which features some incredibly hard to find and forgotten recordings.

Pacific Harp Project

Hawaii is known for being a crossroads of influences, and there’s a new music group in town that is forging a hybrid of classical, jazz, and pop with unique instrumentation.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports the Pacific Harp Project’s sound is more than the sum of its highly talented parts.

Taking a dip into the cool waters of Acid Jazz this evening on Bridging the Gap.

Nothing weird planned to night, just mellow, jazzy, straight shooting with little pockets of world music mixed into the mix.

Award winning pianist Hiromi Uehara has been playing since age six.  A chance meeting in Tokyo with jazz legend Chick Corea set her on a trajectory that took her to number one on the Billboard Jazz Album chart last year.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports Hiromi will be at the Blue Note Waikiki this week, performing her unique combination of jazz, pop and classical music from that album, Spark.

The ancient Greeks classified seven specific kinds of love. In honor of Valentine's Day, Willow Chang has curated an evening of songs she calls "The Seven Faces of Love." She will bring these beloved tunes from theater, pop, jazz, and beyond to HPR's Atherton Studio on Saturday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m. Accompanying her will be Ernie Provencher (bass), Tom Chun (guitar), Thomas Mckay (vibraphone), and other surprise guests.

This time of year, you can feel Honolulu’s major roadways clogging up from late afternoon.  As the pau  hana traffic mounts today, a few dozen people will head to an oasis of calm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Queen Emma street downtown.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports on Jazz Vespers that happen every Thursday at St. Peter’s, starting at 6 in the evening.

Tonight's session of Bridging the Gap will feature a distinctly vintage feel.  We'll be hearing songs from the John Brother's Piano Company, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Polo & Pan and more.
